"I am still under the impression there is nothing alive quite so beautiful
as a thoroughbred horse."
These horses have been described as “majestic and athletic” and they are known to run FAST. For some of these animals now is the time for “new beginnings."
It is time for them to transition away from racing to start exciting new careers in the show ring. They are known as Thoroughbreds or OTTB’s (Off Track Thoroughbreds) and we welcome them to the Thoroughbred Alliance Show Series, an exciting new year of Thoroughbred Only Horse Shows in the MidAtlantic region.
In 2012, Maryland hosted 3 inaugural Thoroughbred Only Horse Shows. All three were wildly successful! The first show, held at the Bel Air Equestrian Center in June, was hosted by MidAtlantic Horse Rescue in Chesapeake City, Md., a 501(c)3 charity. The second was the amazing Totally Thoroughbred Show sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club held in July in the infield at Pimlico Race Course. This horse show attracted over 300 thoroughbreds! The third TB show, Furlongs to Fences, was held at and hosted by Fair Hill in October.
2013 was a BIGGER and BETTER year for OTTB’s with the premiere of the Thoroughbred Alliance Show Series. In order to build on the success of 2012, a group of OTTB advocates came together and formed this alliance. The show series consisted of several Thoroughbred Only horse shows in the MidAtlantic region; each show benefitted rescue and rehoming programs in the area. Horses and riders accumulated points throughout the series towards year end awards. All of the shows were well attended and raised over $30K!!! for aftercare programs throughout the region, thanks to you-- our exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers, and friends-- because of your support, retiring racehorses were the winners~
2014 promises to build on the success of the series. We have added new shows with a variety of venues and classes-there is something for everyone! We have made some minor changes and additions:
•We have added Ky-bred and WV bred high point awards
•We have added a Versatility high point award- points earned in classes OTHER than hunter and jumper specified classes will count towards this award
•The Amateur Rider high point award is for amateurs over the age of 18 who have not reached their 50th birthday, and
•The Masters Rider high point award is now for amateur riders ages 50 and over.
